Oral injuries in patients with renal failure undergoing dialysis treatment

Abstract

Introduction: chronic renal failure represents a growing public health problem. These have manifestations at different levels, such as skin and stomatological apparatus.

Objective: to characterize the behavior of oral lesions in patients with renal failure undergoing dialysis treatment.

Method: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in patients with renal failure undergoing hemodialysis in a Hospital of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security during 2022. The study universe consisted of 61 patients, all of whom were studied. Descriptive statistics were used.

Results: male patients predominated (65,57 %), mean age was 48,77 ± 11,23 years. Oral manifestations were analyzed, where 100 % presented uremic taste and odor, followed by dry mouth (98,36 %), uremic stomatitis (96,72 %) and xerostomia (95,08 %).

Conclusions: oral lesions are common in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. The excesses of plasma urea manifest themselves in a florid form, in the stomatological apparatus causing affectations such as uremic taste and odor, dry mouth, uremic stomatitis, xerostomia and others.
