Characterization of the scientific publications of the journal Gaceta Médica Estudiantil, 2020–2022

Introduction: student publication is essential in the training of future physicians. Cuba has medical scientific journals that allow the dissemination of research carried out by students in the health field.
Objective: to characterize the scientific publications of the journal Gaceta Médica Estudiantil from 2020 to 2022.
Methods: a bibliometric and descriptive study of the publications in Gaceta Médica Estudiantil was conducted. The universe consisted of 72 articles; no sampling techniques were applied. Variables analyzed included: type of article, year of publication, main topics addressed, authors’ origin, number of authors per article, and most cited articles. Graphs and tables were created to represent the data, followed by a quantitative analysis. Bibliometric indicators were studied.
Results: original articles accounted for 51,38 %, and 2020 was the year with the highest number of publications (31). Pediatric topics predominated (13; 18,05 %). Guantánamo had the highest representation of authors (49,04 %). Articles with five authors were most frequent (29 %). The articles Effectiveness of Ozone Therapy in Patients with Chronic Inflammatory Periodontal Disease and Influence of COVID-19 on the Cardiovascular System had the highest number of citations (7 each).
Conclusions: the predominance of original articles, 2020 as the year with the most publications, the pediatric theme, the strong representation of authors from Guantánamo, and the frequent participation of five authors characterize the scientific output of Gaceta Médica Estudiantil.
