Risk factors associated with low birth weight at polyclinic # 2 “Angel Ortiz Vázquez” in Manzanillo: Granma

Introduction: low birth weight is one of the main fundamental indicators of infant morbidity and mortality. In Granma, during 2022, there was a significant increase in this indicator, placing the province second nationwide in this health problem.
Objective: to describe the main risk factors associated with low birth weight at Polyclinic #2 “Ángel Ortiz Vázquez.”
Methods: adescriptive observational cross-sectional study was conducted on the risk factors associated with low birth weight at Polyclinic #2 “Ángel Ortiz Vázquez” in Manzanillo, Granma, in 2022. From a universe of 56 infants, a sample of 30 low birth weight children and their mothers was studied through simple random probabilistic sampling.
Results: maternal ages between 20–34 years predominated, with 18 patients (60 %). Regarding weight gain during pregnancy, most mothers had insufficient gain, with 17 cases (56,6 %). Concerning medical risks prior to and during pregnancy, the most prevalent risk factors were chronic hypertension (40 %) and cervicovaginal infections (56,7 %).
Conclusions: it was determined that risk factors such as insufficient maternal weight, pre-existing and pregnancy-induced hypertension, cervicovaginal infections, and gestational anemia had an impact on low birth weight.
