Epidemiological characterizacion of ectropion and entropion un elderly patients in Pinar del Rio

Abstract

Introduction: aging is a normal process that causes a progressive decline in the body's functional capacity until regressive changes lead to a decrease in biological performance incompatible with life. Demographic trends highlight population aging as the most significant change today. The Cuban Public Health Statistical Yearbook emphasizes the increasing degree of aging in the population over 60 years of age.

Objective: to epidemiologically characterize ectropion and entropion in elderly patients diagnosed with senile ectropion and entropion, from January 2023 to January 2024.

Methods: an observational, descriptive, longitudinal retrospective study was conducted in the Ocular Plastic Surgery service at the "Abel Santamaría Cuadrado" Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital, between January 2023 and January 2024.

Results: according to the data collected during the investigation, Ectropion was the most frequent eyelid condition (82,61 %), with a predominance of males (87,5 %) and most frequently affecting both eyes at the same time (43,48 %). Patients with non-white skin were the least affected by entropion (20 %), with both conditions occurring more frequently in patients aged 71 to 75 years, with a predominance in the municipality of Pinar del Rio (35 %).

Conclusions: ectropion and entropion affect the quality of life of our elderly, so the challenge is to prevent their appearance, as well as, once diagnosed, to provide quality treatment seeking the best possible aesthetic and functional result.
