Characterization of patients with brain tumors at the “Antonio María Béguez César” Pediatric Hospital. 2019-2024

Introduction: a brain tumor is a mass of abnormal cells found in the brain. They are the second most common type of malignant tumor and a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality.
Objective: to characterize patients diagnosed with brain tumors at the "Antonio María Béguez César" Pediatric Hospital from January 2019 to December 2024.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2019 to December 2024. The population consisted of patients diagnosed with brain tumors at the "Antonio María Béguez César" Pediatric Hospital from January 2019 to December 2024, and the non-probabilistic sample comprised the 30 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The variables used were: Age, Sex, Skin Color, Origin, Location, and Histological Diagnosis.
Results: males predominated, with 18 patients (60 %), and the 0-3 year age group was the most common, with 8 patients (26,67 %). Seventeen patients (56,67 %) had mixed-race skin, and 18 (60 %) came from a rural area. The most common location was infratentorial, with 20 patients (66,67 %), and the predominant histological subtype was astrocytoma, with 20 patients (40 %).
Conclusions: tumors predominated in males and in the 0-3 year age range. Most of those diagnosed were of mixed race and from rural areas; the predominant histological type was astrocytoma, and the location was infratentorial.
