A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with the objective of understanding the clinical and epidemiological behavior of smoking in Family Medical Office #103, belonging to the Raúl Sánchez Polyclinic, from May to June 2025. The research data were obtained from interviews with 250 smokers registered in family medical records, using variables selected and designed according to expert criteria. Significant results were found: the predominant age group was 45–55 years, with a total of 54 patients (21,6 %). Men smoke more than women. The onset of the habit prevailed between the ages of 15 and 25, with women representing 18,4 % and men 24,8 %, mostly at a moderate level (53,85 %). Seventy-four patients reported severe cigarette consumption of more than 20 cigarettes per day, and a total of 113 patients had attempted to quit smoking at least once. It is concluded that smoking should be defined as a disease in itself, and not merely as a risk factor for other diseases. “It causes signs, symptoms, and is an addictive disease due to nicotine. While a contagious disease typically involves the transmission of a biological agent, in the case of smoking ‘the mechanism of transmission is social,’ making it urgent to implement prevention and control strategies directed at this vulnerable population.
