Abstract

Introduction: ectopic pregnancy is the result of an alteration in reproductive physiology that allows implantation of the blastocyst outside the endometrial cavity. It is one of the three leading causes of maternal death.

Objective: to characterize the patients diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy in Santiago de Cuba between 2018 and 2019.

Method: observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study at the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital, Santiago de Cuba, from January 2018 to December 2019. Universe made up of 245 patients with a diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy and a sample of 229 patients who met the criteria. of inclusion and exclusion. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used.

Results: the age group from 26 to 35 years (63,1 %) predominated. 55,5 % of the patients reported previous deliveries, and 97,4 % were admitted to the General Surgery service. The most frequent reason for consultation was lower abdominal pain (65,1 %), and the predominant diagnostic impression was ectopic pregnancy (52,4 %) and ruptured ectopic pregnancy (21,8 %). A predominance of left salpingectomy (46,3 %) as treatment was observed.

Conclusions: the patients with a diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy were between the ages of 26 and 35, with an obstetric history of previous deliveries. The most frequent reason for consultation was lower abdominal pain. In most of the patients, the initial diagnostic impression coincided with the definitive diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy, and the most frequently performed surgical intervention was left salpingectomy.
