Introduction: gingivitis is the initial stage of periodontitis, a very recurrent and multifactorial disease; the identification of its risk factors is essential for its subsequent treatment and recovery.
Objective: to identify the presence of risk factors for periodontitis in older adults in the neighborhood of Los Rosales, Santo Domingo.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 30 older adults of Los Rosales neighborhood, Santo Domingo, between July and December 2021. The sample was selected by non-probabilistic purposive sampling. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results: the predominant sex was male and the age group was 60 to 64 years (64 %). 65 % were unaware of the effect of periodontitis on cone diseases, and 63,63 % had not received treatment for periodontitis. 33,33 % reported that they almost always had discomfort in the mouth; 14 older adults had suffered from some disease for five years or more (46,6 %). 13,33 % reported never brushing their teeth. 73,33% of the older adults smoked; 33.33% smoked 6 to 10 packs of cigarettes daily. 56,67 % had diabetes mellitus and 30 % had hypertension as a health history.
Conclusions: the prevalence of periodontitis increases with age, related to poor oral hygiene, presence of systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and in cigarette or tobacco users.
