Influence of diet on tooth coloring, dental materials and the outcome of whitening treatments

Abstract

Introduction: dental whitening therapies are of increasing interest to the general population because they are minimally invasive, do not exclude other treatments and provide the esthetics sought by patients.

Objective: to describe the influence of diet on dental coloring, dental materials and the efficiency of whitening therapy.

Method: a review was made of the literature on the effect of diet on dental coloring, dental materials and the efficiency of whitening therapy. The search strategy was structured using the terms tooth whitening, tooth lightening, diet, beverages, efficacy; Boolean operators were used for their combination. The databases Scopus, SciELO and Redalyc were used, as well as different thesis repositories.

Results: there are multiple foods suggested in the literature that can modify the coloring of teeth, dental composites and the efficacy of whitening therapies. Although it has not been demonstrated that these foods influence the result of the whitening therapy, it is suggested that they have an effect on the time to achieve the desired effect.

Conclusions: coffee, tea, wine, acid-based beverages (citrus fruits) and fruits with high pigmentation potential (such as blueberries) can affect the coloring of teeth and dental materials. Studies in humans are needed to demonstrate the evidence identified, since the available studies are mostly in vitro.
