Clinical-epidemiological characterization of pediatric patients diagnosed with cancer in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba 2023

Abstract

Introduction: cancer in pediatric age is the cause of the potential loss of years of life in children; it causes emotional consequences in relatives and patients, besides representing a serious health problem.

Objective: to characterize the clinical and epidemiological behavior of pediatric patients diagnosed with cancer from January to September 2023 in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba.

Methods: an observational, descriptive and transversal study was carried out; the universe was composed of 17 patients, and we worked with the totality. The data were obtained from the Statistical Department of the Municipal Health Directorate in Palma Soriano. The variables studied were health area, age groups, sex and diagnosis.

Results: the most affected health area was the Community with six cases (35%); the most affected patients belonged to the age groups 12 to 15 years old with six patients (35.29%) and 16 to 18 years old with six cases (35.29%); the sex with the most affected patients was female with 10 patients (58.83%). The most predominant diagnoses were leukemia, lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodking's lymphoma, with two patients each, for 11.76 % respectively.

Conclusions: in the municipality of Palma Soriano, oncopediatric patients of the female sex predominated in early adolescence, and most of them were concentrated in the community area of the municipality.
