Particularities of the history and physical examination in pediatric care practice

Abstract

Introduction: the clinical method, also called the diagnostic process, preserves the techniques used to confirm a hypothesis, through interrogation, physical examination and reasoning.

Objective: describe the importance of history and physical examination in pediatric care practice.

Method: a review of articles published in the PubMed, SciELO, Lilacs, MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar databases was carried out. The terms were used: pediatrics, anamnesis, physical examination and physical examination. A total of 26 references were selected that addressed the main characteristics of the physical examination in pediatrics.

Development: in pediatrics the doctor-patient relationship has the particularity of having parent-patient-doctor elements. The anamnesis is influenced by the skill of the doctor and the maternal personality. The clinical examination varies according to the child's age, somatometry, neurodevelopment and psychological characteristics. The steps of the clinical method are irreplaceable; they should not be replaced by any examination, whether laboratory or imaging.

Conclusion: the clinical method, specifically the anamnesis and physical examination, is of cardinal importance in current pediatric care practice; the excellence and success of comprehensive care for children and adolescents must advance hand in hand with the competence and practical skills of the pediatricians.
