Cutaneous melanoma in a pediatric patient. Case report

Abstract

Introduction: Skin cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the skin tissues. Among these is melanoma, which is a malignant tumor of melanocytes, cells that produce the pigment melanin.

Case Presentation: We report the case of a 9-year-old male patient, white, with no apparent personal or family pathologic history, who comes to the medical center with his mother due to the appearance of a lesion on the skin of the right leg. The mother reports that the lesion has been growing slowly over the last few months and that in the last few days she has noticed a change in its coloration.

Conclusions: melanoma is an uncommon type of skin cancer in children, but its incidence has been increasing in recent years, so it is important to be aware of any change in pigmented skin lesions and to go to the doctor if there is any suspicion, as early diagnosis is key to a good prognosis and adequate treatment.
