Abstract

Introduction: perineal tears appear during cephalovaginal delivery, affect mostly nulliparous or primiparous women, and can cause several acute or chronic complications.

Objective: to argue the causes and complications associated with perineal tears in nulliparous women in the South American region, during the years 2017-2022.

Methods: a narrative literature review was performed, with the use of international databases such as Pubmed, Scielo, through the Google Scholar search engine. In addition, statistical data were used, as a result of which viable information on the subject was acquired.

Development: statistics from South America show that one of the major risk factors for perineal tears is a rigid perineum with 45,6 %, followed by poor medical practice with 23,2 %, as well as when the fetus is large with 20,7 % and finally, poor fetal presentation with 10,5 %. In addition, it was observed that nulliparous women suffer a greater number of grade I perineal tear with 81,2 %, followed by grade II with 16,7 % and finally grade III and IV with a low percentage of 2,1 %.

Conclusions: knowing the complications derived from perineal tears during childbirth can prevent maternal death or dyspareunia, urethral and rectal incontinence, which could affect her daily life and her relationship with her partner, leading her to suffer physical, psychological and emotional damage.
