Abstract

Introduction: stem cells have the ability to divide continuously or so-called plasticity, as well as to generate different progenitor cells and their use has grown in the field of dentistry.

Objective: to argue the need for the use of stem cells for bone regeneration in the oral cavity.

Methods: systematic bibliographic review including studies published in the last eight years, in Spanish and English, articles from indexed journals such as Scielo, Elsevier, Pubmed; focused on bone regeneration that include the implementation of stem cells in the treatment. Studies older than eight years, university repositories and abstracts were excluded.

Development: in vitro studies performed with stem cells cultured from dental pulp in plates show improvement in osteogenic differentiation. The implementation of mesenchymal stem cells helps to minimize problems in the alveolar cavities giving an adequate flange height and stability for satisfactory prosthetic rehabilitation with stem cell autotransplantation. To reduce the loss of alveolar rims it is possible to apply tissue engineering with adult stem cells and biomaterials such as Biograft-G in the bone regeneration of maxillary alveolar cavities is effective in the preservation of the alveoli.

Conclusions: the implementation of stem cells in studies and their application in the dental area have shown favorable results, since they intervene in the bone regeneration of the alveolar rims for their future rehabilitation, providing support.
