Introduction: cavernous sinus thrombosis is a rare and life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. It results from the formation of a blood clot in this space surrounded by vital neurovascular structures.
Objective: to investigate the risk factors, clinical symptoms, and the most effective therapeutic approaches for cavernous sinus thrombosis as a complication of odontogenic infections, with the aim of improving understanding of this condition and its early diagnosis.
Methods: an exhaustive search was conducted on the topic “Complications of odontogenic infection: Cavernous sinus thrombosis.” The PICO format presented in Table 1 was applied to obtain the keywords used in the search for information in scientific electronic databases such as PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Wiley, and Elsevier.
Development: the results obtained in this literature review indicate that combined treatment with antibiotics and anticoagulants has shown efficacy in most patients, thus highlighting the importance of rapid and coordinated intervention.
Conclusions: the most effective treatment combines broad-spectrum antibiotics and anticoagulants, although some patients may develop severe sequelae such as blindness or cerebral infarctions. Careful and individualized follow-up is required.
