Introduction: the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a global health concern, and its impact on adolescents is particularly critical. Young people living with HIV face unique challenges that can significantly influence their adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Objective: to investigate the psychosocial factors that affect adherence to antiretroviral therapy among adolescents with HIV, with the aim of developing effective intervention strategies that improve treatment adherence, promote overall well-being, and reduce the impact of stigma and discrimination in this population.
Methods: the databases used for data collection were Scielo, Dialnet, and Google Scholar. The keywords included: psychosocial, adolescents with HIV, antiretroviral therapy, nursing care, prevention.
Results: the clinical manifestations of physical and emotional states are recognized by nursing staff with the objective of providing quality patient care and offering support to both the patient and their family environment. According to the literature, these findings can contribute to healthcare professionals, especially nurses, in the development of comprehensive care plans and strategies for ART adherence tailored to the needs of each adolescent and young person living with HIV.
Conclusions: current interventions that combine psychological support, health education, and the strengthening of family relationships have proven effective in improving ART adherence and the overall well-being of adolescents with HIV.
