Abstract

Antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed drugs for children, both in hospital and community settings. The most important pending problems are the training of paediatricians, the creation of a multidisciplinary interprofessional antimicrobial stewardship team capable of developing guidelines, the monitoring of antibiotic prescription and the definition of corrective measures, as well as the availability of consensus. administrators with adequate financial support. The problem of optimizing the duration of prescription programs remains unresolved; it is unclear whether such programs should be sustained on an ongoing basis or instead can be implemented until rationalization of antibiotic use is obtained and restarted when significant variations in antibiotic use are needed.
