Characterization of the Student Scientific Group of the University of Medical Sciences of Guantanamo

Abstract

Introduction: the Student Scientific Groups are advisory groups to the direction of the University Student Federation, whose purpose is to promote the systematic analysis of topics of interest for scientific development.

Objective: to characterize the Student Scientific Group of the University of Medical Sciences of Guantánamo in the period January - December 2023.

Methods: an observational, descriptive and transversal study was carried out on students belonging to the Student Scientific Group of the University of Medical Sciences of Guantánamo. The study universe was constituted by 40 students belonging to the Student Scientific Group. The variables analyzed were: faculty/subsidiary of origin, sex, career, academic year, years of seniority in the group, participation in national and international events. Descriptive statistical techniques were used, expressing the results in absolute and relative percentage frequencies.

Results: the students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Guantánamo (n=12) were predominantly male and the students of the Medical Sciences Branch of Baracoa were predominantly male (n=10). Ninety-four percent (n=15) of the students belonged to the 3rd year of the Medicine career. Students with one year of seniority in the group predominated (n=21). The prevalence of female students was observed in the national scientific events and the male sex predominated in the international events.

Conclusions: the Student Scientific Group of the University of Medical Sciences of Guantánamo is characterized by the wide variety of students it has, besides having a high scientific research impact in the different scenarios.
